There are so many facets to marketing and sometimes I feel like everyone gets caught up in the next big trend of marketing, whether it’s Pinterest or Facebook or Snapchat and Hashtags. Or they are constantly disheartened at their lack of budget to buy a billboard or a TV spot or to hire a helicopter to fly a banner… There is always going to be a bigger and better marketing strategy and medium out there, you just need to be smart in choosing the right options. Now I’m certainly not saying to ignore them – you need to engage in the relevant mediums for your business and keep up with certain trends or you’ll be left behind, but there are often forgotten mediums that need to be brought back because they just plain work.

A Phone Call – Do you remember when getting a phone call used to be exciting when you used to look forward to answering the phone because you didn’t know who it was or why they were calling? In the digital age where everything is electronic, you really stand out when you can build a genuine relationship with someone.

Now this isn’t going to work with every industry, or with every client, and these days you need to be especially careful not to sound like a telemarketer, but a well-timed, genuine, purposeful phone call can go a long way.

Make sure you check you have them at a good time, get to the point, quickly, and allow them the chance to respond and respect that response – however, a good trick a friend taught me… If they don’t say no, you have every right to keep calling (every month or so, not every day… I don’t encourage professional stalking (or any stalking for that matter.))

A Hand Written Note – When was the last time you received one? It may have been a while ago, but I bet you can remember who it was from and roughly when – I can guarantee people don’t have that kind of recall for the 20th email blast you’ve sent this year. Emails have their place, but for good clients, and ones who bring in a majority of your profits, a handwritten note goes a long way – as does a Thank You!

Snail Mail – Snail Mail has gotten a bad rep with the amount of junk mail we as consumers receive on a day-to-day basis – but a well-thought-out and well-executed marketing strategy sent by post can still deliver excellent results!

The Staff and your community – The people associated with your brand can be your best or worst marketers. Build a community of brand positive people that will represent you well and you will go far, have a community of people who don’t mesh with your brand and clash, and no matter the marketing campaigns you put in place it will eventually fail.

This goes for instore staff and staff on phones, brand ambassadors, customers, followers, and networkers – you need to surround your brand with the right people – they are your brand for many businesses and they need to have the right fit.

Product Showcase – Is there a way you can showcase and demonstrate your product? Whether it is at a shopping center or a tradeshow? Maybe you can do live demos in the street or there is an event for your industry you can attend to show off your new product. Think outside the box and you’ll come up with some great ideas – try them, see what works, what doesn’t, and improve upon them!
