If you’re sick of having your Facebook Ads rejected, and you feel like you want to throw your computer out the window every time you get that “ad not approved notification…
There is hope! I’ve run multiple campaigns for weight loss companies and there are a few tricks and rules you need to be aware of.
1. You cannot use before and after pics. Yes, I know this is your biggest selling point. No, Facebook will not be changing this anytime soon.
I know you’ve seen others do it, but I promise Facebook took that ad down eventually. And their account will have been penalized for it.
2. You can’t imply anything that could possibly make someone feel bad about themselves, or portray any kind of “body ideal”.
Most marketing is focused on highlighting a pain point (ie. a desire to lose weight, wanting a certain body type) but you can’t do this on Facebook.
And to be honest, it makes sense.
If Facebook didn’t have these rules in place, if you were uncomfortable with your body type, it would be an awful place to hang out.
If every time you logged on you were reminded of something you were struggling with, you’d leave.
There are ads that slip through the system, but I don’t want you to be one of them. I want you to be an inspiring and positive influence AND get your ads approved!
So what can you do? What will get approved?
Focus on the positives, be inspiring, think outside the box.
What can you create that’s motivating? What are the core desires to lose weight that have nothing to do with weight itself? Is it an accomplishment, do they want to climb mountains of play with their kids?
Do your research (check out our blog on research here) – find out their deepest wants and use that to leverage your ads.
Do they want to love the body they are in, do they want to find a way to enjoy exercise, do they want delicious, easy meals the whole family can enjoy?
Once you’ve run an ad and collected an email address – it’s on your territory and you can push the weight loss language a little more – but those first few steps it’s vital to be positive and inspiring.

Sharing exercise videos, and recipes are are wonderful ways to get people involved.
Be warned, if you use these strategies in your ad, and then take them to a page full of before and afters and weight loss talk, your ad will still be banned (there is occasionally an exception to this rule if you specify that others results aren’t indicative of the results you can achieve… but it’s still a bit iffy and best to avoid.)
The best thing you can do in this situation is to provide value. Share your best information, and add as much value to people’s lives as you can.
When you give people the information they can take and start to see results they are more likely to trust you and do business with you in the long term anyway – so you may as well start the relationship on a positive note.
A little note to keep in mind. There are a million (I’m guessing here) other businesses, trainers, nutritionists, MLM’s, dieticians, and naturopaths trying to help people lose weight.
Focus on providing excellent value, differentiate yourself from the crowd, do things differently, be you – and you’ll be far more successful than if you try and do what everyone else is doing.
