The newest social media craze – Pinterest…
In case you haven’t heard of it, or used it yet – It is basically a way for you to store the images and content from websites that you like, storing them to a ‘board’ so that you can view them at later date. For example, you find a recipe online, you can “Pin It” and it will store it on your recipes board. That board and image store the link to the original site so you can always find the recipe! Boards people use include recipes, wardrobe ideas, travel ideas, things they want to do, what they would like their dream house to look like, and much much more!
So how does this relate to you and your marketing?
Pinterest will never be the sole focus of your marketing strategy – but with over 10 million users it can definitely increase your visibility if you use it right. Two companies that are doing a fantastic job of this are Chobani (An American Yogurt Company) and Oreck (A vacuum manufacturer).
I’m sure you’re wondering, just as I was, how two totally different companies could be using Pinterest for their marketing. But it is simple. They know their customers, they know who they are as a brand – what they stand for, and they use this to their advantage.

Not only are they posting product images, but customers using and enjoying the product, in the case of Oreck, before and afters, as well as the fun aspects of Pinterest such as dream homes, places to visit, etc.
So should you be on Pinterest? It’s really up to you. Who are your customers? Where do they live? One downside to Pinterest – or upside, depending on your business is that it isn’t constrained to a certain location – so you could have followers in Paris, and all over America, even if you just have a little shop in Byron Bay, Australia. If you have a small local shop that doesn’t have an online presence it’s probably not for you, however, if you dream of turning that into an international online store it could work wonders.
Although Pinterest can be used really well for Marketing, it can also take a toll on the amount of spare time you have, so do be careful! It is rather addictive…
