Have you ever been scrolling through your feed and come across an ad that made you stop and laugh out loud? Or maybe one that was so relatable, you couldn’t help but click through and learn more? As consumers, we’re bombarded with ads all the time, so it’s no surprise that the ones that stand out are the ones that are a little different. That’s why it’s important to have fun with your Facebook ads.
I know a lot of brands get really caught up in being perfect, and 1000% on brand all the time, and I get it. It’s important to be on brand but I want to show you why injecting a little humour and personality into your ads can pay off in a big way. We’ll also look at a few examples from clients and other brands that show just how effective this approach can be.
Reasons why it’s good to have fun with your Facebook ads
-
Relatability: People don’t want to feel like they’re being sold to all the time. There is a big movement towards ads that don’t look like ads. When your ads are too sales-y or perfect, they’re more likely to be ignored. By infusing your ads with a little personality and humour, you make them more relatable to your audience. They’ll be more likely to pay attention, engage with your content, and even share it with their friends.
-
Differentiation: Let’s face it, there are a lot of ads out there. If you want your brand to stand out, you need to do something different. Having fun with your ads is a great way to differentiate yourself from the competition. It shows that you’re not afraid to be a little unconventional and that you’re willing to take risks. This can help you build brand recognition and loyalty over time.
Dollar Shave Club
One of the most famous examples of a brand having fun with their ads is Dollar Shave Club. Their 2012 ad, which featured founder Michael Dubin talking about “our f***ing great blades,” went viral and helped the company skyrocket to success. The ad was funny, irreverent, and relatable, and it spoke directly to the company’s target audience of young men who were tired of overpaying for razors and people still remember it nearly 10 years later.
Dinosaurs and Fashion
One of our clients often gets some UGC content provided to them by clients. They’re a relatively classy fashion brand, and one of their customers sent through a picture of them running away from a cardboard cut-out T-Rex… I knew it was amazing. After convincing said client, this one ad went on to make them over $8000 with a 7.6x ROAS – essentially $1000 turned into $8000 because they weren’t afraid to have a little fun with their brand
BarkBox
Another brand that’s known for having fun with their ads is BarkBox, a subscription service for dog owners. Their ads often feature dogs doing silly things, like wearing party hats or sleeping in funny positions. These ads are relatable to dog owners, who love nothing more than seeing their furry friends in amusing situations. The ads have helped BarkBox build a loyal following and stand out in a crowded market.
Cow Puns
Another of our clients sells horse riding apparel and one of their customers sent through a hilarious photo of both a cow and their horse wearing a horse rug… paired with some awful, but fantastic cow puns, this one had saw huge engagement and one ad even had a 14x ROAS.
As you can see, having fun with your Facebook ads can be a great way to connect with your audience, differentiate yourself from the competition, and build brand loyalty. If you can’t get the fun images yourself, as our clients will show you UGC is a great way to get this kind of content.
