Why Testing Always Beats Trend-Chasing in Meta Ads

There's a lot of noise right now.
If you've spent more than ten minutes in any Facebook group, marketing Slack channel, or god forbid on TikTok, you've probably seen someone screaming that "traditional funnels are dead" or that "you're wasting money if you're not using Advantage+ everything."
Deep breath.
Because while yes, things are changing, Advantage+ campaigns are rolling out, automation is doing more, and Meta is pushing us toward broad targeting and simplified setups, the idea that there's one magic structure that works for every account? Absolute rubbish.
The truth? Some of our clients have only just gotten access to the newest Advantage+ campaign types. Some are thriving with full Advantage+ setups. Others are seeing better results with traditional funnel structures. Most are seeing success with a combo.
So what actually works? Testing. Testing works. Testing always works.
What's Changing (and What's Not)
Meta is pushing hard toward AI and automation. Think less manual control, more machine learning. Advantage+ campaigns, broad targeting, predictive creative placements, it's all designed to reduce complexity and make things easier for you.
But here's the thing: these changes are not consistent across all accounts. Rollouts are staggered. Features behave differently depending on spend levels, verticals, and account history.
So while one account might thrive going all in on Advantage+, another might tank. That's why blindly copying someone else's campaign structure is not a strategy.
And some of these changes are not for the better, at least not right now. They may be okay or even fantastic one day. But for now, we do not blindly trust in Meta and its AI.
What's Still Working
Here are the setups we are still seeing great performance from, today, right now:
Traditional funnels with stacked interest targeting and lookalike audiences
Middle of funnel retargeting using UGC and testimonials
Manual campaign structures built around product categories or collections
Broad targeting with strong creative, especially when paired with brand awareness content
Basic Advantage+ setups
Complex Advantage+ configurations with funnels built within the new structure
Some clients are seeing better results with the new Advantage+ campaigns. Others are combining traditional and new structures in the same account and getting brilliant results. That's why we test. Anyone saying one thing is the only way right now is just wrong, and probably not working across a range of clients. Or trying to scare you into working with them.
The Real Danger of Trend-Chasing
Following trends without testing can actually tank performance. Just because someone with a beauty brand in the US saw a bump using a full Advantage+ setup doesn't mean it'll work the same for your sustainable homewares brand in regional Australia.
Campaign structure, audience types, and what creative lands will vary wildly based on:
Your product
Your price point
Your audience
Your geography
Your funnel
Your messaging
The age and data your account has
You can't shortcut your way to profitable ads by copying a screenshot from someone else's Ads Manager.
What You Should Be Testing
If you're going to get strategic (and you should), here's what we recommend testing:
Campaign types: Advantage+ vs manual setups
Audiences: broad vs stacked interests vs lookalikes vs Advantage+ audiences
Creative types: problem-solution, UGC, testimonials, branded, founder-led, aesthetic vibes
Offers: bundles, discounts, bonuses, free shipping
Landing page variants: especially important if CTR is high but conversions are low
Don't test everything at once. Make sure you can isolate your variables. Watch the metrics. Make decisions based on data, not panic.
Meta is evolving, and yes, automation is the direction we're heading in. But if you're throwing out everything that used to work without testing it first, you're flying blind.
The only way to know what's right for your account is to test it.
So don't panic. Don't jump just because someone else is yelling. Get strategic, run your tests, and keep your focus on what actually moves the needle.
Because testing beats trend-chasing. Every time.
